“When Love Is New”, track four on Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers’ 1964 LP Indestructible (Blue Note).
Featuring Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Reggie Workman on bass, and of course, Art Blakey does his thing with the drums. Pianist Cedar Walton wrote this song and is also featured on the keys. Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers: what a group!
The first thing that strikes me about this album, as many Blue Note-released LPs do, is the phenomenal cover art. Marvel at it… beautiful! Just as I suggested with this Dexter Gordon post, make sure to pick up the re-issue copy. Digitally remastered, it features a bonus track six, “It’s a Long Way Down”, written by Wayne Shorter. Another lovely tune.
“Darn That Dream” off Dexter Gordon’s 1964 album One Flight Up (Blue Note).
Featuring Donald Byrd on trumpet, Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, Kenny Drew on piano, and Art Taylor on drums.
Recorded in France. Amazing album in its entirety. Make sure to get the reissue copy with track four, “King Neptune”, written by Dexter Gordon himself.
